Emergency First Aid and CPR

Well it is time to review my CPR skills, so why not write a note about it?

Emergency First Aid

When arriving at the scene of an accident, the first three things (CCC) to do are:

1. Check

Whether in combat or civilian emergency, this one is the most important step.

This step should take less than 2 seconds.

Quickly assess the scene so that you don't expose yourself to any danger, same or other.

Assess what has happened to the person and what is his state. Are there other casualties?

Are there bystanders who can help? Assign them tasks with clear voice and direct commands (You-Do-This).

2. Call

This step should take less than 30 seconds, you can try to make it simultaneous with steps 1 and 3.

If the situation is serious, consider calling help at this point.

International Emergency Number: 911
Emergency Number in Finland and in the European Union: 112

(If you dont want to alert anyone, but want information, call 09-10023 in Finland to talk to a nurse for medical assitance)

State the following:

  • Your name (if there is no reason not to give it)
  • Description of what happened
  • Your exact location
  • Number of injured people
  • Their condition
  • What help is currently being given
3. Care
  • Reassure the person
  • Assess outwardly what is wrong
  • Monitor airway, breathing and circulation (pulse)
  • Provide CRP if necessary
  • Tends to major wounds
  • Place victim in better position
  • Dont let the victim get chilled or to die on you
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or CPR

Open airway

Give 2 rescue breaths. Make sure that the head is bent back so as to open the airway more. Hold the nose so the air doesn't escape.

Compress chest 30 times

Continue cycle of 2 rescue breaths and 30 chest compressions.

Wounds

Pressure

Elevation (Elevate the wound area so that it is above heart level if possible.)

Tie wound and keep pressure on it.

If there is a knife or anything, don't remove it. You might damage more tissue and blood vessels and encourage more bleeding. Let the hospital take it out.

Rescue Breaths on water

When diving after surfacing, inflate the victims BCD and drop his weights.

Tow with rescue breathing at 2 breaths every 15 seconds or 2 breaths every 5-10 kick cycles

Make sure you hold the nose. Keep stripping the victims equipment while you paddle and breathe.

Remember to breathe yourself.
